Introducing The Bean Book, a groundbreaking web-based tool developed through a partnership between the dfcu Foundation formerly ADC, Agtuall team, and the Rabo Foundation. This innovative solution is tailored to address the intricate price risk challenges faced by cooperatives and SMEs in the Ugandan coffee sector.
The Bean Book combines three essential modules i.e. The market intelligence module provides real-time data for international and domestic coffee prices, including Fair Tradecertified minimum prices, Transactions module offers a comparison of Offer prices with current international and domestic prices, also enabling co-operatives to compare Offer prices with their breakeven prices and Risk modules Provides historical simulations to assess maximum margin payments
during the hedge cycle using ‘Futures ‘contracts on ICE Exchange. This also includes margin requirements hedging cost calculations and position analysis, enabling effective risk management. All these modules are to empower users in navigating the diverse and dynamic landscape of the coffee industry.
To date, we have onboarded over 25 coffee SMEs and cooperative who are interacting with the platform and created over 60 coffee contracts both local and exports.

The second module is an intricate simulator for financial decision-making, offering a practical understanding of potential gains and losses associated with hedging through futures contracts. It also furnishes crucial insights into managing the net open position, equipping users with the skills to navigate the volatile market and mitigate financial risks effectively.
The third key component of the Bean Book tool is the Transaction Module, which is meticulously designed to provide critical functionality for financial management within the coffee sector. This module aids users in evaluating the sales price of their coffee contracts, enabling them to benchmark their pricing against the current market conditions. By doing so, it allows them to gauge whether they are getting a fair market value for their commodities.
